A microphone array can determine the location and power of sound sources. Sound sources external to the area of interest can be faded out using suitable techniques such as delay-and-sum. In this case, the signals of multiple microphones are recorded synchronously. By shifting the signals of each microphone in a proper way, the individual time delays between microphones and the sound source can be compensated for. These phase-corrected microphone signals are then summed up. The result is a better signal-to-noise ratio between the sound source and the noise sources.
