Acoustics Becomes a Smart Sensor in Rail Vehicles

At InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, we demonstrated how modern microphone technology, acoustic sensors, and intelligent audio processing can be used for new applications in rail vehicles.

The video shows one of our demos: Several microphones capture acoustic signals along a vehicle model. The visualization immediately reveals where a sound event originates. This allows us to demonstrate the dynamic control of microphones and the localization of speakers or sound sources.

But it wasn’t just our own demos that were exciting for us. In numerous discussions, it became clear just how much the field of acoustics has expanded beyond traditional voice communication. Application areas such as the following were discussed particularly frequently:

  • Acoustic vehicle diagnostics for the early detection of anomalies and technical defects
  • Increased safety through intelligent diagnostics and continuous acoustic condition monitoring
  • Vandalism detection via characteristic noise events
  • People counting and capacity detection
  • Condition-based and predictive maintenance
  • External microphones and acoustic sensors for capturing and evaluating sounds from the vehicle’s surroundings
  • Autonomous rail transport: Acoustic sensors as an additional source of information for detecting safety-related events and supporting autonomous train systems

Our takeaway from Berlin: In rail vehicles, the microphone is increasingly evolving from a simple communication component into a multifunctional, intelligent sensor.
When combined with intelligent signal processing and AI-powered noise detection, this opens up new possibilities for vehicle diagnostics, operational safety, predictive maintenance, and autonomous driving.

Especially with regard to the autonomous trains of the future, acoustic sensor technology can make an important contribution by providing additional information that effectively complements other sensor systems.
